XC trip to Turkey — Aksaray and Çameli

Two World Cup sites in one calendar. Aksaray is the dormant volcano Hasan Dağı above the flat Anatolian plain: cloudbase at 4000 m and landings anywhere. Çameli is forested high country on the edge of the Taurus, where Turkey's distance records are set.

Why fly here

What this place gives you

Strengths

  • Aksaray has hosted four World Cup rounds (2018, 2021, 2023, 2025); in 2023 seven tasks of 74–94 km were flown in one week
  • Flat plains around the volcano: you can land almost anywhere, retrieve is simple
  • Çameli holds Turkey's records: 356.4 km open distance (Dora Göksal, 19.07.2020, Yaylacık → Sivrihisar, 9 h 04 min) and a 220 km FAI triangle
  • Dry autumn: in September Aksaray gets about 12 mm of rain and three rainy days with 278 hours of sunshine

What is dangerous here

  • Rough thermals: at PWC 2023 climbs of up to 7 m/s and sink of up to 9.6 m/s were recorded — active piloting required
  • Cold at base: 4000–4500 m is “very cold even in summer” — gloves and layers are a must
  • “Blue” days without cloud markers over the desert plain; the Ihlara gorge is up to 150 m deep
  • Çameli: changeable wind on launch (PWC 2024, task 1); fronts and the north-easterly wind cancel days
Routes
