Why fly here

What this place gives you

Strengths

  • Algodonales — limestone ridges and fields, gentle mornings, good for getting into XC
  • Àger — the straight wall of Montsec above the plain, a launch for 150 gliders, the classic 55 km through the Terradets gorge
  • Piedrahíta — the Castilian plateaus and the Sierra de Gredos, a convergence line more than 300 km long
  • Piedrahíta: 50 km to Ávila is flown regularly even by inexperienced pilots; a 100 km out-and-return and 200 km open distance are achievable

What is dangerous here

  • Algodonales can be blown out for several days in a row — the levante and poniente from the Strait of Gibraltar
  • Algodonales: few landing options because of the olive groves; there is livestock in the fields, including fighting bulls
  • Àger: rotor at Coll d'Ares in an easterly wind; crossing the reservoir is not recommended
  • Piedrahíta: a tight window — you need to be in the air by 13:30, after that the wind picks up; landing in the Gredos means a long retrieve
Routes

What people fly here

The Piedrahíta record is 312 km, Thomas Puthod, 29 July 2010: eight hours in the air, maximum altitude 4600 m. The previous site record was 245 km, 2009. Àger: the classic 55 km through Terradets; the long-range goal is a 200 km out-and-return to Sierra Ferrera.

Competitions. Piedrahíta has hosted the Spanish Championship and the Belgian Paragliding Open. The World Cup has come to Àger.
