How the world teaches

The ninth module of the “Small wings” course. How speed is taught in Switzerland, Norway, France, Spain, the UK, the USA and in APPI, two roads into speed, our steps next to the world ones, wing loading, law and insurance, exams, and where we do it differently and why.

Why look at others

In shortSpeed is taught in many countries, and everyone has different rules. We checked our programme against the federations of Switzerland, Norway, France, Spain, the UK, the USA, New Zealand and against APPI. Where our numbers match, we show it. Where we do it differently, we explain why.

Almost everywhere there are 2–3 steps before solo flights. At the first step there are 25 to 50 flights, then a waiting time and a gradual move to smaller wings. No country gives a beginner a small wing straight away.

Real-life example. Traffic rules are different in different countries, but a red light means “stop” everywhere. Speed is the same: the details differ, the main things are the same.

What follows is for our students

The full module text, the practice sessions and the exams are open to those who train with us. Access to the theory is included in the course fee: it runs for the whole course and for three months after it ends.
